The remix (or maybe its re-master) has begun
A few years back Cell Culture (halon and cedub) started a project to write an atmospheric drum and bass album in Reason (version one at the time). The album became a five track EP and eventually it was finished about 2 years ago (version 2.5 then). Since then it has sat on a shelf and was something that got passed around via MP3 and a few burned copies to friends.
So why did it sit around for so long? Well, the original concept was to have accompanying video and it was going to be released as a DVD. Then due to budget constraints it was going to be a VCD and then finally it was just shelved and that was going to be it.
Thanks to the formation of Fake Science (more to come on that) the album is going to finally see the light of day. Chris and I took the Reason masters and brought them into the studio. There we have re-patched all the outputs to feed into Digital Perform 4.5 (DP) using Rewire and have begun remixing the album.
In reality we are not changing much of the original source, but just redoing EQ, levels, some ‘verb and other fun little tricks (like hooking up the Filter Factory to MIDI). This is why it may be considered a re-master vs. a true remix.
Now that the process has begun, all I have to say is “wow”. The album already sounded pretty decent but I felt that the original mix wasn’t the best. Now with the new levels and the quality outboard and inboard gear this thing is really starting to shine. We are planning on finishing the mix in early January and then we will send it off to be mastered. Once the mastering is done Fake Science will be pressing it and starting to work out distro, promo, etc.
Keep checking here because I will be updating this blog about Fake Science, upcoming projects and I will also announce when the album is ready for sale. Until next time!
